In a sweet, small community in Northern Nevada there is a man made lake.
It’s not used for swimming or boating or fishing, and much of the time there isn’t even any water in it at all.
In fact, when I went to our inspection for the home we lived in during our time there, I asked the seller’s realtor what kinds of things the community used the lake for. For context, the lake was quite full at the time.
Here is how our conversation went:
Her: It’s not a lake. It’s a dry lake bed.
Me: It’s not a lake?
Her: Yes. It’s not a lake, it’s a dry lake bed.
Me: …. But, there’s water in it…
Her: Well, yes, there’s water in it now, but there usually isn’t. It’s a dry lake bed.
Me: Ok…
In the three years we lived there, the lake was a great reflection of the region’s rainfall, and often had water in it. Its waters were even used to fight the rampant wildfires in the West on more than one occasion.
The lake is called White Lake, and it is decidedly brown. And the lake is a symbol of the place that cherishes it. “Keep White Lake brown,” is a beloved joke in that community. We love White Lake.
That community is where White Lake Press was born, named after the place we love. We don’t live there anymore, but our connection to our former home lives on through White Lake Press.
And the lake that wasn’t a “real lake”, but held water just the same is a standard. It didn’t remain a dry lake bed just because it was expected to. White Lake is a disruptor of the status quo, and so is its namesake.
Here at White Lake Press, we take dreams and make them into reality, turning fantastic hopeful authors into published authors, and taking ideas and spinning them into real resources for parents and children to use together.
And the heroes of our titles maintain that standard too. They each rise above trials, circumstances, and false self beliefs, and choose personal growth and improvement. Alonso, Taki, Timmy, and the narrator of My 3 Moms set an endearing and memorable example of perseverance, character, and growth mindset. (We did have to leave out our CCNB animal groups here. That crowd is just pure silliness. Plus facts ).
