About the Book
Tona has BIG feelings.
There are many things in her day that she does not want to do. Leave the park? No thanks. Share with her sister? Hard pass.
And there, to help her executive function is SAM, the little messenger who travels between her “upstairs” and “downstairs” brain.
When Tona is distressed, SAM steps down. When mom offers choices, comfort, or understanding, SAM steps up.
This groundbreaking book gives toddlers insight into their own brains, and helps parents to understand what’s going on in their own little monster’s noggin.

My children and I found this book to be a truly enjoyable read. It presents excellent examples of how the cortex and amygdala function, along with basic illustrations of how each is stimulated in daily activities. The age-appropriate examples make the information accessible for children, and it serves as a helpful reminder for parents. Furthermore, the book offers various solutions and tools for navigating challenging moments when our children are experiencing emotional responses, which is also beneficial for us as parents. My family and I have found the book's suggestions to be quite useful, and my children have responded positively to them.
Loved it!
Great story that my kids really relate to. It's helped us get through some very tough feelings. The art is absolutely amazing and beautiful. Printing does not do the images or the text justice. I hope this duo does a follow-up with better quality printing. Don't sleep on this one!
This is a beautifully illustrated book that helps parents and children handle those big feelings in a way that helps everyone feel cared for and seen. I have just ordered another copy to share with family!
I was optimistic about this book when I saw the BEAUTIFUL artwork. It was eye-catching and engaging for young readers, their adults and even the teens I work with! The story itself was easily understood and applicable for all ages! I can't wait to recommend this book to everyone I know who works with children! I will be buying a class set of the physical copies to use with my classes :)
